在教了十七年书之后，杨氏于一九六六年，离开普林斯顿大学，前往纽约州立大学石溪分校主持理论物理研究所的研究工作。他认为是自己「走出象牙塔」，重新出发，科学界人士对他再度获得诺贝尔奖的可能性，抱持期待与乐观。杨夫人杜致礼女士，出生名门，为杜聿明将军掌珠，专攻文学，中英文造诣均佳，曾在台湾教过英文，在美国纽约州立大学石溪分校教中文，言谈举止富书卷气，育子女三人，老大杨光诺电脑工程师，老二杨光宇，化学家，杨又礼，医生。
